A few years back, the collection of clinical information was an exclusively manual process: patient data was provided on paper CRFs. After the double data entry phase when inconsistencies were detected, the case report forms needed to be checked, updated and signed off manually. It was very time consuming. But now, thanks to electronic data capture, all that is in the past. All data are electronically gathered, accessed and monitored in real time.
