Many opinion leaders notably active in the academic world set up data collection projects in order to support and illustrate hypotheses of treatment and diagnosis.These projects are either financed by health organizations or sponsored by pharmaceutical laboratories. They can be on a large scale depending on the number of investigators involved in their network (working groups) and can be deployed on a local or international level.

For budgetary reasons, it is noted that many of these projects are still too often supported by a paper CRF. Yet the current trend is to see these projects deployed on a larger scale and consequently paper cannot act as a brake on their introduction.
